This Green Mountain & Finger Lakes region was always my first pick for a vacation filled with greenery and peacefulness, as me and my family adored the destination and always holds a special place in our heart.
This hidden gem in New York offers the most unique visuals of the natural beauty and some highly captivating experiences for the visitors, from hiking to camping, there is something for everyone. Now, let’s take a look at the various immersive attractions and more of the Finger Lake National Forest.
A Synopsis of Finger Lakes National Forest, NY
The one and only national forest of New York State which is the western national forest reminiscent and connects more than 30 miles of trails flowing through ravines, gorges, woodlands and pastures. My most favorite part about the forest is its unique wildlife habitat, the gorgeous beauty of the surrounding and the various recreational activities out there.
Situated between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake, you can witness the many stunning views of the lake and the countryside. Oh and the wildlife, I was lucky enough to spot some white-tailed deer, wood ducks, Easter Wild Turkeys and some bobcats too. Moreover, in the 1400 acres of shrubland, there is so much for us visitors to set our sights upon.
I visited the forest in the month of May and I believe the best time to visit the regions are from May to September as there are a wide array of outdoor pursuits available at that time.
Hikes in Finger Lakes National Forest
Every nature lover’s favorite thing to do is taking a hike through the enchanting trails of the region. Lucky for you, there are some really captivating trails in Finger Lakes National Forest, from easily achievable to somewhat difficult too. Anyone can be a part of hiking in the national forest.
As I stated earlier, there are more than 30 miles of tranquil hiking trails in Finger Lakes National Forest, and among them I’ve picked a few as my favorites and the best. Here are some of them which will be ideal for your traversing through the forest:
1. Burnt Hill and Interlaken Trails
One of the best hiking experiences I’ve had, as much as the trail is easy to conquer, it takes around 1 hour and 30 mins to complete. The trial offers some really amazing views of the birds and wildlife which is the best part of it.
You can also bring your dogs for walking in the trails too but make sure to keep them on leash. Now, the best time to visit the trail is from May till October.

2. Interloken Trail
An amazing point to point trail to visit in the national forest of Finger Lakes. The trail can be a bit challenging for beginners and it took almost 3 hours and 50 mins for me to complete the whole route. The spot is super famous for backpacking, camping and even fishing so it can be somewhat packed, however you may experience the solitude during the quieter times.

3. Finger Lakes Backbone Trail
One of the greatest trails for birding, cross-country skiing and hiking in Finger Lakes National Forest, also my top 3 trails of the region. The trail peaks during March till October and can be a bit packed in the number of visitors. The trail is located near Burdett in New York and is moderately challenging too. Now, here are the details about this trail:

Camping at Finger Lakes National Forest
Camping in nature’s paradise can be an exciting thing to do for every outdoor enthusiast like me. Rejoice as dispersed camping in finger lakes national forest is allowed which means you can go camping outside the designated areas, isn’t that amazing?
Moreover, you may camp anywhere but the spot should be 50 feet away from the ponds, trails, streams and developed areas. Also, there are three developed campgrounds in the forest which are:
1. Backbone Horse Campground
A cozy, small and semi-primitive campground in Finger Lakes forest which is located near to Burdett, NY. The campground is open all year for picnickers, backpackers, campers and travelers with horses. The campground provides a public restroom and picnic tables too. You may have to be on site earlier as possible as the whole site is on a first-come, first served basis.

2. Blueberry Patch Campground
Another one of my favorite spots in the region to set up a tent. It is a small and semi-primitive campground featuring nine campsites and wheelchair access, public restrooms, picnic tables, walking trails, and parking lots. The campground is really secluded, well-spaced and even has a ton of tree shades. You can also get easy access to several hiking trails too.

3. Potomac Group Campground
My most favorite spot for camping in the Finger Lakes National Forest, Potomac Group Campground, is a primitive group area for camping and can easily accommodate up to 45 people I would say. The adoring beauty of the forest from this spot is something so spectacular as me and my family loved it. They even provide picnic tables, grills and vault toilets too.

Exciting Wildlife Sighting in Finger Lakes Forest
Finger lakes could be one of the best places to explore the natural wildlife, the national forest is home to a wide range of wilderness. You may witness the unique wildlife in the regions and even take snaps of them as it was among my favorite family activities. But make sure you keep a safe distance while viewing them.
Moreover, you should know that hunting in Finger Lakes National Forest is permitted but it requires a valid state hunting license. You may go for small and big hunting games and can pursue black bears, whitetail deer and waterfowl on the spot. Also, these are various wildlife spotting you can expect:

Finger Lakes offers some of the iconic and picturesque views of the forest through its scenic drives. I would usually finish my vacation with a peaceful and calming drive through the regions and I just love that sensation. I usually took the Interloken Trail Scenic Byway to view the rolling hills, forests and the vineyards.
Another pick would be the Seneca Lake Scenic Byway which takes you right through the stunning shores of Seneca Lake which gives mesmerizing views of the regions and some memorable experiences. Now here are some other routes to witness the beauty of Finger Lake:
