Fishing on Torch Lake: A Paradise for Anglers

If you’re a fishing enthusiast just like myself, Torch Lake is an amazing destination for a fishing adventure. Pack your bait and rods, you do not want to miss out on a great haul! As a frequent angler at Torch Lake, where I have spent a handful of summers, here is a list of the best fishing spots on Torch Lake, species of fish and everything you need to know before experiencing the magic of fishing in Torch Lake.

North End of the Lake

I’m sure any local angler would also recommend the north end of Torch Lake as a great spot for fishing. In the north end, particularly near the mouth of the Grass River, is a great spot as you will see that there is an abundance of weed beds, and the area has the most clear water. The clear water and weed beds are what attract the fish to such an opening. If you are casting artificial bait, shallower waters are perfect, which means shore fishing is perfect for you if you have artificial bait.

South End of the Lake

The south end of Torch Lake is near the mouth of Torch River and is also another great spot to cast your line into! You can also enjoy Torch Lake bass fishing in this area as it is where most smallmouth bass and pike are found.

East Side of the Lake

The east side of Torch Lake is where you will find bigger fish. The depth on this side can range from 20-50 feet, making it ideal for fish species like lake trout, walleye, and smallmouth bass. As an angler, I would recommend using live bait or jigging to catch larger fish.

Types of Bait to Use in Torch Lake

Are you not sure about what bait to use while fishing in Torch Lake? Choosing the bait can make a significant difference in your haul. Not to worry, here is a list of baits you can consider using while on the waters of Torch Lake.

Live Bait:

Live bait is a popular choice among anglers in Torch Lake; you can use minnows, worms or leeches to target a variety of fish species. Live bait generally attracts species like bass, pike and panfish. While using live bait, make sure to keep the bait lively and on the same level as the fish.

Artificial Bait:

Artificial bait works just as well as live bait, and can actually be used to attract species like smallmouth and largemouth bass. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits and soft plastics are excellent for these species. Swimbaits are also great for targeting muskies.

Surface Lures:

Top layer lures like buzzbaits and poppers are very effective while shore fishing, and are good for attracting smallmouth and largemouth bass in Torch Lake. These baits often tend to imitate insects or small fish and can help in retrieving the fish based on the fish’s activity levels.

Jigs:

Jigs can be used for many species, including panfish and lake trout. Anglers should use jigs along with a piece of live bait or a soft plastic trailer to attract fishes.

Trolling Baits:

Trolling with downriggers or planer boards is a great way to catch fish in Torch Lake. I would recommend using crankbaits, spoons or spinners to target a large variety of fish, even lake trout and walleyes can be tracked using trolling baits.

While choosing a bait for fishing in Torch Lake, keep in mind what fish species you’re targeting as well as what time of year it is.

It is also smart to try out different baits and see what’s working best for you. By experimenting with different bait options you can increase your chances of catching more fish!

Insider Tips for Fishing Successfully

If you are planning on fishing in Torch Lake, here are some tips that you must keep in mind.

Fish during low light conditions: Fishing early in the morning or in the evening is ideal while fishing in Torch Lake. Fish are more active during this time, so they are most likely to feed on your bait.

Use a fish finder: There is no harm in taking the help of a useful tool like a fish finder, especially if it can help locate schools of fish in a place like Torch Lake. A fish finder can help you determine the depth of the water, and the location of the fish, and it allows you to adjust your bait accordingly.

Be patient: If you are new to fishing, you will need to learn to be patient. Don’t give up right away, there’s plenty of fish in the sea! Sometimes it can take longer to find the fish.

Carry the right equipment: You don’t want to be a fisherman with the wrong rod. Make sure you have the appropriate gear for the species of fish you’re targeting. Different fish species require different kinds of equipment. So, make sure you do your research and carry the right equipment.
